Nima Technology make a comprehensive range of Langmuir troughs and film balances. By following the trough nomenclature below, you can specify almost any combination of size, function and option.
where |
A = area (x 100cm²) |
D = dipper type |
|
B = number of barriers |
|
F = primary function of trough |
|
O1 = option 1 |
|
O2 = option 2 |
| Area, x100cm² | Dipper type | No of barriers | Function | Option |
| 1 = 100 | 0 = no dipper | 1 = 1 barrier |
A = Analytical | CAB = Cabinet |
| 3 = 300 | 1 = conventional LB/LS dipper* | 2 = 2 barriers |
BAM = Brewster angle microscopy | IB = Independent barriers |
| 6 = 600 | 2 = alternate layer dipper | - - | D or D1 = Dipping D2 = alternate layer dipping |
IJP = Injection port |
| 7 = 700 | 3 = both types of dipper | - - | LL = Liquid/liquid trough | MST = Magnetic stirrer |
| 12 = 1,200 | --- | --- | M = Microscopy | SP = Surface potential sensor |
| --- | --- | --- | MC = Multiple compartments | --- |
* LB dipper = vertical Langmuir-Blodgett method
LS dipper = horizontal Langmuir-Schaefer method
Example 1: Model 712BAM:
| 7: | 7 x 100 = 700cm² |
| 1: | Dipper mechanism |
| 2: | 2 barriers for symmetrical compression of monolayer about centre of trough |
| BAM: | Function is Brewster Angle Microscopy |
Example 2: Model 612D:
| 6: | 6 x 100 = 600cm² |
| 1: | Conventional dipper mechanism |
| 2: | 2 barriers for symmetrical compression of monolayer about centre of trough |
| D: | Function is conventional LB or LS dipping |

The term 'Langmuir film balance' is used for instruments without a dipper as pioneered by Langmuir in 1917.
|
'Langmuir-Blodgett trough' is used for instruments with a dipping well and dipper mechanism, as developed by Blodgett in 1930's. | ||
|
102M Microscope Film Balance Miniature trough (100cm², 40ml) for microscope applications. With 2 mechanically coupled barriers and a sapphire window. Flat design means that it fits any upright microscope. Inverting microscope option available. Can be upgraded easily into our dipping trough, Model 112D. |
|
112D Micro LB trough Micro 100cm², 45ml Langmuir trough for deposition of conventional LB layers onto substrates up to 20mm wide to a depth of 25mm. Can be converted easily into Model 102M microscopy film balance. |
