Microscopy Troughs

Microscopy and UV-Visible spectroscopy of a monolayer can be performed on any Nima Microscopy Langmuir Trough. A sapphire window in the trough base allows high optical transmission down to a wavelength of 200nm.

Nima produce Microscopy Troughs suitable for standard upright microscopes and for inverted microscopes.

The Multi-Compartment LB Deposition Trough is also fitted with a sapphire window making it suitable for Microscopy and Spectroscopy applications.

UV-Visible absorption spectroscopy of monolayers on the Langmuir Trough can be used to determine how light-absorbing molecules interact with one another when a monolayer of the molecules, or mixtures of molecules, are compressed to various surface pressures. By controlling the surface pressure of the monolayer, you are controlling the molecular neighbour-neighbour separation and packing density.

The transmission properties of the sapphire microscopy window and the glass inverted microscopy window are shown below.

The Inverted Microscopy Langmuir Troughs enable you to reach a microscope objective lens to within 2.2mm of the monolayer surface, from beneath, leaving the upper surface of the monolayer free of obstructions for a large range of vapour/radiation adsorption/exposure experiments to take place.

It is also possible to perform LB deposition on the Microscopy and Inverted Microscopy Langmuir Troughs by purchasing the optional dipping well and 40mm stroke dipping mechanism (product code D40).

Precision control of the surface pressure is achieved using a sensitive computer-controlled feedback system between the Surface Pressure Sensor and the compression barriers. Compression barriers are made from Delrin, for enhanced monolayer stability, but PTFE compression barriers can also be supplied upon request.

We have price lists available for UK, Europe and USA. If you require a price list in your local currency or require a firm quotation please contact us.

All Langmuir and LB Deposition Troughs come complete with computer interface unit, power supply, cables, USB adapter, mini-toolkit, surface pressure sensor, Wilhelmy plates, calibrated software, hardback user manual, Interfacial Science textbook and a monolayer kit to get you started making monolayers.

All Nima instruments are covered by a three year warranty. If a fault develops during this time, we will repair the instrument free of charge.
